I haven’t ever met a celeb on the road. I avoid the locations where the beautiful people go to spend their beautiful money, as I try to strech mine.

One time I did sit and talk on the porch of the bamboo hut of the aunt of one of our interpreters. This was in a Karenni village in the Shan Hills some distance from Mae Hong Son, Thailand. I drank rice wine off the hulls. A few weeks later Angeline Jolie sat on the same porch. This is not as much of a coincidence as it might seem; if you were looking for someone in that village who spoke some English, you would end up on that porch.

I bought a 2-liter soda bottle of rice whiskey from a friend of our interpreter. Later, I smuggled that moonshine back to the states, consuming it at a party held at a refugee officer’s home in DC, with some of his coworkers in attendance. Many of them were former Peace Corp, and some of those who had served in Asia instantly recognized the rice whiskey for what it was. Later still, I met that interpreter and her aunt’s family again, when they came to the US as refugees from Burma.

One night in Montanita, Ecuador, I met some hostelers at the North end of the malecon, by the beach. They were a friendly group, and after a while I excused myself and procured a bottle of Ron Abuelo Anejo from my room, along with one shot glass. We passed that bottle and glass among us until the rum was gone. This was at the end of January 2020 just before the pandemic was announced.

A few guitars appeared, and our tongues had been loosened sufficiently that we could sing. A pleasant time was had by all. The next day, that group of hostelers had left.

No dramatic change, except that I have two more experiences to look back on wistfully.

There is no common theme to these encounters, except distilled spirits.
