I’ll start with one! I was in Santiago, Chile during its incredibly violent 2019 protests. I was walking back to my hostel from lunch when I was caught in the middle of a policeman hitting a protester with tear gas. I couldn’t see, and I was stuck in the middle of a busy intersection. Car horns blaring, people screaming. I felt an arm guide me to the sidewalk, and then, all at once, my eyes were relieved. I blinked and, through tears, I saw a young woman with a cardboard sign under her arm smiling at me and applying solution to my face. “Todo bien?” she asked. “Si, todo bien,” I said. And she was gone.
